Description
Licorice is a typical herbaceous perennial herb with pinnate leaves and belongs to the bean family (Fabaceae). It is native to the Western Asia and southern Europe. Licorice root is considered as one of the world’s oldest plant used for herbal remedies which uses the root of the licorice.
It has antibacterial, anti‐inflammatory, antiviral, antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-ulcerative, antimicrobial, sedative and anti-depressive properties.
Licorice has been used as treatment for dysfunction in the respiratory system, for stomach ulcers, heartburn, indigestion, sexual disability and asthma. It is effective against skin bacteria, can relieve stomach discomfort, toothaches, fever, sore throat, bronchitis, coughs and menstrual cramps.
Liquorice has a very sweet, aromatic smell just like liquorice sweets while the flavor is spicy with a lingering, sweet aftertaste.
