Description
Dittany is a tender, bushy, perennial sub-shrub forming a spreading mound of small, rounded, fuzzy silvery-white leaves, it belongs to the Lamiaceae family and native to the mountains of Crete.
It has anti-aging, antibacterial, anti-microbal, anti-rheumatic, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, oxytocic, hypertensive, sedative and stimulant properties.
Dittany is used to aid menstrual cramps in women, digestive disorder, gastrointestinal problem, stomach ache, toothache pain. It also helps cure fever, cold and flu. When dittany is used externally as a poultice, it could help reduces pimples, wounds and bruises.
The odor of dittany is quite strong, sharp and slightly bitter reminiscent to the smell of oregano or thyme due to the presence of carvacrol and thymol in it. Whereas the taste of dittany is warm, bitterish and aromatic.
